Fixing pages that scanned in sideways

It’s a common problem with scanned documents: someone feeds a stack of pages into a scanner with a few sheets turned the wrong way, and the resulting PDF mixes upright and sideways pages in the same file. Opening it means constantly tilting your head or rotating the view in your PDF reader, which doesn’t fix anything permanently - the next person who opens the file has the same problem.

This tool lets you correct it once. Load the PDF, spot the pages that are sideways or upside down in the thumbnail grid, and click each one until it looks right. The fix is baked into the file you download, so it opens correctly everywhere from then on.

Rotating a single page vs the whole document

Each thumbnail in the grid is clickable. One click turns that page 90° clockwise; click it again to keep turning until it’s back where you started. This is the fastest way to fix a handful of stray pages in an otherwise correct document.

If the entire PDF was saved in the wrong orientation, for example a document scanned entirely in landscape when it should read as portrait, use the Rotate All Left or Rotate All Right buttons above the grid instead. They apply the same turn to every page at once, and you can still fine-tune individual pages afterward.

Why some PDFs look rotated only in certain viewers

PDF pages carry their own internal rotation setting, often called the /Rotate flag, independent of the actual page content. A page can technically contain upright content but display sideways because that flag is set to 90 or 270 degrees. This is why a file sometimes looks fine in one PDF reader but sideways in another.

This tool reads that existing rotation for every page and adds whatever additional turn you request on top of it, rather than ignoring it. That means the output looks correct in any PDF viewer, not just the one you tested it in.

What happens when you save

Clicking Rotate & Download PDF applies your changes using pdf-lib, which only updates each page’s orientation flag rather than re-rendering the page itself. Text stays sharp, images keep their original resolution, and file size barely changes. The download is named after your original file with _rotated added, so it’s easy to tell apart from the source.

When a PDF can’t be rotated

Password-protected or encrypted PDFs can’t be read by the tool, since it never sends the file anywhere to have the password checked. If loading fails, you’ll see an error message under the upload area. Remove the password using a PDF viewer first, then try again.

Corrupted files that fail to parse will show the same error. Opening the file in a PDF viewer first can confirm whether it’s valid before you try rotating it.
